When learning about sound energy, our class completed several projects to discover and reinforce some big ideas about sound. Here are two of them:
Build an Instrument
First, we learned about the different types of instruments that make up an orchestra and how each creates music. Then the kids were given access to a variety of supplies and instructed to design a musical instrument. The basic requirements? Design an instrument that creates its own sound and be able to change the pitch and volume (frequency and amplitude) of the sound. Check out what they came up with.

Soundproof Rooms
Steve has a problem. He loves to rock out on his drum set, but his neighbors...they don't love it so much. The mission? Design a room for Steve that will absorb as much sound as possible. After building building their rooms, students used a decibel meter iPad app to measure the effectiveness of their design.
